🚶‍♂️ Walking With AI: How Superprompts Turn Smart Glasses Into Companions

Picture this: you’re walking through the woods, and a voice beside you points out the old oak tree, helps you slow your breathing, or even starts a conversation about 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'. Not a friend or tour guide—but an AI companion, alive in your smart glasses, thanks to a superprompt.

Smart glasses on their own are just hardware. Pair them with AI and you get functionality. Give them a purpose, and suddenly they become fascinating. That’s the promise of superprompts: they shape the AI into a meaningful role during your walk.

I spent a day experimenting with this. My AI companion took on different roles: a nature and history guide, a mental coach, even a philosophy buddy. Each role created a different experience.

But I also ran into limitations. The built-in AI didn’t work well—the text-to-speech failed and replies only appeared on my phone. Using the ChatGPT app in conversation mode was a good workaround, but the phone screen had to stay active. And AI often jumped in too quickly, which made me rush my words when walking actually invites a slower rhythm.

Another challenge: when the AI is locked into a role, it won’t suddenly answer “what tree is this?” if it’s busy being your mental coach. That makes the dialogue less spontaneous than with a human. And AI can’t share experiences—no “this reminds me of last week’s walk.” After a while, that makes the conversation feel one-sided. To top it off, the app eventually switched to a lighter AI model. The difference was subtle but noticeable: fewer nuances, flatter answers.

The real breakthrough came when I added context into the superprompt. Not just “be my coach,” but also details about the route, the environment, or personal goals for that day. For example: “You are my walking companion on a 20-kilometer route from Vught to the Loonse and Drunense Dunes. Your primary role is a nature guide, but you can also answer occasional personal or philosophical questions. I want to use this walk to reflect on slowing my pace and improving my breathing. Wait three seconds before you answer, keep replies under 90 seconds, and occasionally ask me a question back.” Suddenly the conversation was focused, relevant, and much more enjoyable.

That’s the lesson: the magic of smart glasses doesn’t come from megapixels or battery life, but from the experiences they unlock. Without a clear purpose, they risk becoming another gadget that gathers dust. With a carefully written superprompt, they turn into something richer: a coach, a curious guide, or a thoughtful companion who transforms a simple walk into a meaningful journey.

In the end, smart glasses only become truly interesting when they’re not about the glasses themselves—but about the stories, reflections, and ideas they bring to life while you’re moving through the world.
